The Democratic Majority is more important than the Public Option

The subject line is a direct quote by Steve McMahon today on "The Ed Show" with Ed Schultz.

When video is made available I will post it. Until then, please see the transcript I've put together from the show.

This about sums up the hypocritical, egocentric, myopic view of all beltway democrats who believe their own power is more important than doing what we elected them to do.

I sit here utterly disgusted at the blatant and naked self-serving attitude of it all.

Here's the rough transcript of this bit. Ed and Steve were talking about conservative democrats who are in regions of the country that John McCain carried. Regions of the country that still want a public option however.

Ed was kind enough to point that out:

SM: Most of [the conservadems] want healthcare reform but they don't want a public option for philosophical reasons. The philosophical reasons are "I'll get beat."

ES: IT'S NOT ABOUT THEM! Thank you for pointing that out. That's exactly what I'm talking about. They think it's about their job, about them.

It's not about them! It's about the American people. This is not about a bunch of grandiose elected officials. "Well I might not get re-elected if I don't vote against this."

SM: Well you know a lot of people don't think healthcare reform is all about the public option.

And the truth is you need a democratic majority so you can do climate change. So you can do a whole range of things. So you can do financial reform.

It's more important to have a democratic majority than it is to have a public option.

ES: No no no no no. The President has said the key to economic recovery in this country is doing healthcare reform.

SM: Listen, there are public option options that are being discussed now. They're limited, they're narrow.

My understanding is that Speaker Pelosi doesn't have the votes for a public option.

It's not just these moderates in the Senate who are concerned too.

The Democratic Majority is more important than the Public Option.

ES: No. No!

SM: Yes! Nancy Pelosi wouldn't be speaker. Eric Cantor will be speaker.

ES: Steve! No! I don't believe that.

Again, I'll follow with video and the official transcript when it's posted, but I'm really pissed right now.

Steve McMahon is one of the more prominent democratic strategists in the party, and THIS is what passes as conventional wisdom in the beltway?

Good lord. What next Steve? What next?

The Democratic Majority is more important than the Environment?

The Democratic Majority is more important than Financial Reform?

The Democratic Majority is more important than LGBT Rights? (Sure seems that way these days)

The Democratic Majority is more important than Ending The Wars In Iraq and Afghanistan?

What exactly did we elect these buffoons for if they don't deliver what they promised to deliver? Seriously?

Good lord.
